VisitChina and Japan Reach Agreement on Fukushima Water Discharge, Easing Seafood Ban
Sep 20, 2024, 07:16 AM
China and Japan have reached an agreement on the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the ocean. This agreement includes Japan's commitment to establish a long-term international monitoring arrangement covering key aspects of the discharge. China has stressed that independent sampling should be conducted before gradually resuming imports of Japanese aquatic products, according to CCTV. Japanese Prime Minister Kishida stated that China will start the process to ease restrictions on the seafood ban based on additional monitoring results. Both countries have agreed to expand the current monitoring of the wastewater released from Fukushima, and China has agreed to steadily return to previous levels of marine imports from Japan for products aligned with Chinese regulations. However, the ban will not be lifted immediately, and China's opposition to the discharge of the contaminated water remains unchanged.
