VisitChina Constructs $300 Million Neutrino Detector in Guangdong
Oct 16, 2024, 12:15 AM
China has constructed the world's largest transparent spherical detector, the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory, 700 meters (2,300 feet) underground in Guangdong province. This $300 million facility aims to capture elusive neutrinos, often dubbed 'ghost particles,' to unravel the secrets of the universe. The installation is expected to be completed by November, with full operation scheduled for August 2025. The observatory will soon start gathering data on neutrinos, a product of nuclear reactions, to help solve one of the biggest mysteries in particle physics. China's advanced particle physics research is set to outpace the U.S.
