VisitChina Conducts First ICBM Test in 44 Years, Launches DF-41 into Pacific Ocean
Sep 25, 2024, 02:51 PM
China has conducted a rare public test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the Pacific Ocean, the first such test in 44 years. The missile, likely a Dongfeng-41, launched from Hainan Island at 08:44 on September 25, carried a dummy warhead and traveled over 12,000 km to international waters in the Pacific Ocean. The Chinese Defense Ministry stated that the launch was part of the PLA Rocket Force's annual training plan and was not directed at any country or target. The ministry emphasized that the test was in line with international laws and practices, and relevant countries were notified in advance. The launch has raised concerns among neighboring countries, with Japan expressing serious concern over the test. The Pentagon acknowledged China's transparency in notifying other countries before the launch, viewing it as a positive step in military communication. The ICBM is capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads and reaching speeds of up to Mach 25.
