The Chinese government has approved the construction of what is set to be the world's largest hydropower dam, located in Tibet on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. This ambitious project is expected to generate approximately 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is three times the output of the Three Gorges Dam, and could meet the energy needs of over 300 million people. The total investment for the dam is projected to exceed 1 trillion yuan (about $137 billion), making it the most expensive infrastructure project globally. The initiative has raised concerns among neighboring countries, particularly India and Bangladesh, regarding its potential impact on water resources and local ecosystems.
