Nov 3, 2024, 04:45 PM
Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya and Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands claimed victories in the women's and men's races, respectively, at the 2024 New York City Marathon. Chepkirui, a marathon debutant, secured her first major marathon win with a time of 2:24:35, pulling away from defending champion Hellen Obiri in the final mile. Obiri finished second in 2:24:49, and the Kenyan dominance was underscored as they swept the women's podium. In the men's race, Nageeye, the silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, won in 2:07:39, marking his first major marathon victory. His triumph ended a streak of 31 consecutive major marathon wins by Kenyan and Ethiopian runners. Evans Chebet of Kenya finished second in 2:07:45, Albert Korir of Kenya placed third in 2:08:00, and Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia finished fourth in 2:08:12. Nageeye bounced back from a did-not-finish at the Paris Olympics.
