VisitChargers' Dicker Makes Record 57-Yard Fair-Catch Kick, First Since 1976, in Win Over Broncos
Dec 20, 2024, 02:50 AM
Los Angeles Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker made NFL history by converting a 57-yard fair-catch free kick, the first successful attempt since 1976, during Thursday night's game against the Denver Broncos. The rare kick occurred just before halftime and is now the longest successful fair-catch free kick in NFL history, surpassing the previous record of 52 yards set by Paul Hornung in 1964. Dicker revealed that the Chargers have been practicing the fair-catch free kick under special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken and that he was unaware of the rule before joining the team. They regularly watch Panthers kicker Joey Slye's 60-yard attempt from 2019 to prepare. The Chargers are the only team to have executed a successful fair-catch free kick since the NFL-AFL merger, with Ray Wersching accomplishing the feat in 1976 and Dicker repeating it nearly five decades later. The Chargers went on to defeat the Broncos 34-27.
