VisitCanadian Parliament Faces Treason Allegations; Bloc Québécois Urges Hogue Commission Inquiry
Jun 10, 2024, 09:52 PM
Canada’s Parliament is embroiled in a significant controversy following allegations of treason against some members for allegedly aiding foreign agents. The accusations have prompted the Conservatives and Bloc Québécois to urge the government to hand over the collusion allegations to the Hogue Commission for a foreign interference inquiry. Minister LeBlanc has stated that the government supports a Bloc motion to have the interference inquiry review intelligence on parliamentarians working with foreign states, although releasing names publicly is not an option. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has agreed to expand the public inquiry into election interference to include these treason allegations. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has criticized Trudeau for not releasing the names of the implicated MPs and has called for the inquiry to also investigate the Conservative leadership race. All federal parties have pledged support for the motion that asks the Commission on Foreign Interference to unmask foreign spies in Parliament. Former CSIS head Richard Fadden commented that the alleged behavior is not treasonous, highlighting a broader problem with the lack of an offence for 'foreign interference.'
