VisitCanada Announces Plan to Replace Submarine Fleet with 12 Submarines to Shore Up Arctic Defense
Jul 10, 2024, 08:40 PM
Canada has announced plans to replace its submarine fleet, taking the first step towards procuring up to 12 conventionally-powered, under-ice capable submarines. The announcement was made at a NATO summit, and is seen as an effort to address criticism of Ottawa's defense spending. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that the process to formally engage industry on this acquisition has begun. The move is intended to shore up Arctic defense and meet NATO targets. Former navy commander called the purchase “long overdue.”
