California Sues ExxonMobil Over 50-Year Plastic Recycling Deception

California has filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil, accusing the oil giant of misleading the public about the recyclability of plastics. The lawsuit, announced by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, alleges that ExxonMobil engaged in a 50-year campaign of deception that overhyped the promise of plastic recycling, contributing significantly to the global plastic pollution crisis. The suit claims that ExxonMobil's actions have exacerbated the environmental impact of plastic waste, affecting waterways in California and worldwide. Environmental groups such as Surfrider, the Sierra Club, Heal the Bay, and San Francisco Baykeeper are also involved in legal actions against ExxonMobil for similar reasons.
