VisitBrazil Lifts X Ban Amid Calls for Alexandre de Moraes' Impeachment
Sep 18, 2024, 12:15 PM
Brazil's 22 million X users were banned from the platform, with fines of up to 50,000 reais a day (~$9,000) for those using VPNs to access it. Despite the ban, prominent right-wing politicians continued to post, citing free speech and constitutional rights. The White House Press Secretary commented on the ban, emphasizing the importance of access to social media as a form of freedom of speech. Recently, reports indicate that many users in Brazil are able to access X without a VPN, although there has been no official confirmation from the courts. The Supreme Federal Court (STF) attributed the platform's return to instability in the blocking mechanism. Alexandre de Moraes has been called a serious threat to Brazilian democracy and there are calls for his impeachment.
