VisitBrazil Lifts Month-Long Ban on Elon Musk's X After R$28.6 Million Fine
Oct 8, 2024, 08:54 PM
Brazil's Supreme Court has lifted the month-long ban on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, after the company complied with court orders. The platform, owned by Elon Musk, was suspended in late August due to non-compliance with legal requirements, including appointing a local legal representative and removing certain user accounts. X has since paid fines amounting to R$28.6 million and met all the necessary conditions for reinstatement. The decision to lift the ban was authorized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who stated that the platform can now resume operations immediately. Brazil's Prosecutor General also supported the reinstatement. X has approximately 22 million users in Brazil, making it one of its largest markets. The move is seen as a significant step in the ongoing dialogue around free speech and misinformation.
