VisitBrazil Lifts Ban on Elon Musk's X After $5.24 Million Fine Paid
Oct 8, 2024, 08:24 PM
Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has been reinstated in Brazil after a suspension that began on August 31. The platform was originally suspended by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for failing to comply with court orders related to anti-child-abuse practices and disinformation, including appointing a legal representative in Brazil and removing certain user accounts. X attempted to pay fines totaling 28.6 million reais ($5.24 million) but initially sent the payment to the wrong bank account, causing delays in the reinstatement process. After correcting the payment and fulfilling all court requirements, Brazil's Supreme Court lifted the ban on October 8, allowing X to resume operations for its 22 million users in the country. Brazil's prosecutor general stated there were no reasons why X should not resume activities, and the Communications Minister called the company's decision to comply with Brazilian law a victory for the country.
