VisitBrain-Computer Interface Restores Casey Harrell's Voice with 97% Accuracy
Aug 14, 2024, 09:15 PM
A groundbreaking brain-computer interface has enabled Casey Harrell, a man with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), to communicate effectively despite his impaired speech. The intracortical speech neuroprosthesis achieved over 97% accuracy in decoding his intended speech, allowing it to be audible in his natural voice. This technology, involving 256 electrodes implanted in the brain, has restored the patient's ability to speak clearly. The device has been effective for more than seven years, though ALS-related neurodegeneration eventually rendered it ineffective.
