VisitBomb Cyclone, Atmospheric River to Deliver Up to 24 Inches of Rain to Northern California From Tuesday
Nov 18, 2024, 02:25 PM
A powerful Pacific storm system is forecast to impact the West Coast starting Tuesday, bringing significant rainfall, heavy mountain snow, and strong winds to Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The storm is expected to undergo rapid intensification, known as bombogenesis, potentially lowering central pressure to around 940 millibars, comparable to a Category 4 hurricane, possibly setting a record for the deepest cyclone in the region. Wave heights up to 70 feet are expected offshore. The resulting 'bomb cyclone' will drive a strong atmospheric river, categorized as a Category 4 or 5 event, toward the coast, delivering up to 24 inches of rain in mountainous areas of Northern California and Oregon, with 10-15 inches expected in Redwood National Park, 6-8 inches in Redding, 4-6 inches in Santa Rosa, and 2-3 inches in San Francisco. Seattle and the Puget Sound area are expected to experience wind, snow, and minor flooding. The storm is anticipated to produce hurricane-force winds along the Washington coast and Vancouver Island, potentially causing power outages and ferry delays in British Columbia. Mountain passes could receive 10-30 inches of snow, with higher elevations seeing up to 4 feet. Travel disruptions are expected throughout the region. The National Weather Service has advised residents to stay informed as the situation develops.
