VisitBoise State Women's Volleyball Forfeits Saturday Match Against Undefeated SJSU Over Transgender Player Controversy
Sep 27, 2024, 10:06 PM
Boise State University's women's volleyball team has decided to forfeit its upcoming match against San Jose State University, scheduled for Saturday, citing concerns over the inclusion of a transgender player, Blaire Fleming, on the undefeated SJSU team. This decision follows a letter from the group Icons Women urging Mountain West schools to withdraw from competitions involving male athletes in women's sports. Boise State's decision was supported by a vote from the team and has garnered praise from various figures, including Idaho Governor Brad Little and Senator Jim Risch. Governor Little noted the decision aligns with the spirit of his Executive Order, the Defending Women’s Sports Act, emphasizing player safety. The NCAA responded by affirming its commitment to promoting Title IX and ensuring compliance with its rules and regulations. Southern Utah University also recently forfeited a match against SJSU for similar reasons.
