VisitBoeing CEO Faces Senate Grilling Over Safety Lapses, $32.8 Million Salary, and 346 Deaths
Jun 18, 2024, 06:40 PM
Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun testified before the U.S. Senate, acknowledging that the company's safety culture is 'far from perfect' amid new whistleblower allegations. The hearing follows a series of safety lapses, including a January mid-air emergency involving an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9. Calhoun apologized to the families of the 346 people who died in previous 737 MAX crashes and admitted to manufacturing defects, such as the Alaska Airlines door plug incident. Senator Richard Blumenthal revealed more than a dozen whistleblowers have come forward, alleging fraud and deception at Boeing's Renton 737 MAX assembly plant. A 204-page report detailed these new allegations. Calhoun faced tough questions about his $32.8 million salary and the company's efforts to intimidate whistleblowers, including John Barnett. The FAA's head admitted the agency was too hands-off in its oversight of Boeing.
