VisitBoar's Head to Close Virginia Plant Indefinitely Amid Deadly Listeria Outbreak, Nine Deaths, 57 Hospitalizations
Sep 13, 2024, 02:21 PM
Boar's Head Provisions has announced the indefinite closure of its deli meat plant in Jarratt, Virginia, following a deadly listeria outbreak. The outbreak, which has been linked to the plant, resulted in nine deaths and 57 hospitalizations across 18 states. Reports indicate that inspectors had warned about significant health and safety violations at the plant two years prior, citing rusted equipment, condensation, and mold. Despite these warnings, the plant continued operations until the outbreak. The closure will affect approximately 500 workers, who will receive severance and relocation offers. The tainted deli meat was sold at major retailers including Stop & Shop, Albertsons, and Target. An $11 million lawsuit has been filed against Boar's Head in connection with the outbreak.
