VisitBlue Jays' Top Prospect Orelvis Martinez Suspended 80 Games for PED Violation
Jun 23, 2024, 03:23 PM
Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez has been suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Clomiphene. Martinez, 22, is Toronto’s top hitting prospect and made his Major League debut on Friday night against the Guardians. The suspension comes as a significant blow to the Blue Jays, with Martinez having led the organization with 16 home runs this year. The team expressed disappointment in a statement, with General Manager Ross Atkins stating, 'We were both surprised and disappointed to learn of Martinez’s suspension. We will do everything in our power to ensure Orelvis has learned from this mistake.' Martinez is eligible to return on September 23. The Blue Jays have called up Steward Berroa to replace him.
