VisitBlinken Aims for Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release Before Biden's Term Ends
Jan 6, 2025, 05:37 AM
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed confidence in reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza within the next two weeks, aiming to conclude the deal and secure the release of hostages before President Joe Biden's term ends on January 20. Blinken emphasized the urgency of finalizing the agreement, stating that the U.S. would continue to work tirelessly until the end of Biden's administration. He noted that while the ceasefire could potentially be achieved under Biden's presidency, it might also happen after his term, under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Blinken's comments come amid intensified engagement by Hamas, which has indicated readiness to release 34 hostages as part of a potential deal with Israel, with indirect talks resuming in Qatar. Blinken has made 12 visits to the Middle East since the Hamas incursion on October 7, 2023.
