VisitBJP Wins Majority in Delhi MCD Standing Committee Elections with 115 Votes Amid AAP Boycott
Sep 27, 2024, 09:33 AM
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) witnessed significant political drama as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed over the standing committee elections. The elections were initially postponed due to chaos in the MCD House, with AAP councillors protesting against frisking and the postponement of the session by Mayor Shelly Oberoi until October 5. The elections were rescheduled for 1 PM the following day. BJP's Sunder Singh Tanwar won the 18th seat of the standing committee with 115 votes, securing a majority for the BJP with 10 seats against AAP's 8 seats. AAP boycotted the voting, calling the elections illegal. BJP leaders, including Delhi President Virendra Sachdeva, accused AAP of conspiring to stop the elections. The BJP is now set to appoint the committee's chairman.
