VisitBitMEX Pleads Guilty to Violating Bank Secrecy Act, Lacks AML Program
Jul 10, 2024, 09:30 PM
Global cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX, also known as HDR Global Trading Limited, has pled guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act by failing to establish an adequate anti-money laundering (AML) program. The Department of Justice announced that BitMEX admitted to operating without an AML program from 2015 to 2020. This plea comes years after the company's co-founders, including Arthur Hayes, Samuel Reed, and Benjamin Delo, also pled guilty to similar charges in 2022 and received probation. The case is overseen by U.S. District Judge John G. Despite the guilty plea, BitMEX has dismissed the charges as 'old news' and clarified that their business operations will not be affected.
