Biologists Create Yeast Strain with Over 50% Synthetic DNA, Advancing Complex Cell Genome
Nov 8, 2023, 04:45 PM
Biologists have achieved a significant milestone by creating a strain of yeast with over 50% synthetic DNA, a major step towards developing the first complex cell with an entirely synthetic genome. Researchers have engineered designer versions of all yeast chromosomes and incorporated almost half of them into cells that can survive and reproduce. The highly edited strain of yeast contains 7.5 artificial chromosomes and has completed chromosome XI, marking a major advancement in synthetic biology.
