Bernard "Bernie" Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot and a prominent philanthropist and Republican megadonor, has died at age 95. With an estimated fortune of $7.4 billion, Marcus co-founded The Home Depot in 1978 at nearly 50 years old, after beginning his career as a pharmacist. Serving as its first CEO for 19 years and as chairman until his retirement in 2002, he led the company to become the world’s largest home-improvement retailer, revolutionizing the industry.
