VisitBill Belichick, Six-Time Super Bowl Winner, Signs $50M Deal to Coach UNC Football
Dec 12, 2024, 12:00 PM
Bill Belichick, the former head coach of the New England Patriots and a six-time Super Bowl winner, has been appointed as the new head football coach at the University of North Carolina (UNC). He replaces Mack Brown, who was fired at the end of the regular season. The hiring marks a significant shift for Belichick, who has never coached at the college level before, but has a personal connection to UNC through his father, Steve Belichick, who was an assistant coach there. The deal, which requires approval by UNC trustees, is for five years and could be worth up to $50 million. Belichick's arrival comes at a time when college football is undergoing rapid changes, including player movement through the transfer portal and revenue sharing. UNC's athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, described the hiring as a 'new approach' to ensure the football program can evolve and compete effectively. Belichick's first game with the Tar Heels will be against TCU.
