VisitBiden Transfers 11 Guantanamo Detainees with Al Qaeda Ties to Oman, Reducing Prison Population to 15
Jan 7, 2025, 01:51 AM
The Biden administration has transferred 11 Yemeni detainees with suspected Al Qaeda ties from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to Oman, significantly reducing the prison population to 15—the lowest number in its history. Among the released are alleged former bodyguards of Osama bin Laden. The detainees, held without charge for over two decades since the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, are being resettled in Oman to start new lives, according to a Pentagon statement released on Monday. The transfer, carried out in secrecy, represents the largest reduction of the prison population in years.
