VisitBiden Announces $690 Million Effort to Combat Gender-Based Violence on VAWA's 30th Anniversary
Sep 13, 2024, 01:45 AM
President Joe Biden commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) by announcing new significant actions to curb gender-based violence. The Biden administration will roll out over $690 million in grant funding to support survivors of domestic abuse and gender-based violence. The new initiatives include measures to address online harassment and abuse, and to help ease housing issues faced by many survivors. The Violence Against Women Act, first introduced by then-Senator Biden in 1990 and signed into law in 1994, has been a cornerstone in providing vital resources and protections for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Biden, alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, emphasized the need for continued efforts to end gender-based violence and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening VAWA's protections. Biden also highlighted the importance of cultural change in bringing the epidemic of violence against women out of the shadows.
