VisitBarbora Krejcikova Wins First Wimbledon Title, Defeats Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4
Jul 13, 2024, 01:30 PM
Barbora Krejcikova has won her first Wimbledon singles title, defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in a thrilling final. This victory marks Krejcikova's second Grand Slam singles title, following her 2021 Roland Garros triumph. The Czech player, seeded 31st, overcame the seventh-seeded Italian Paolini in a match that went the distance. Krejcikova's win is particularly poignant as she drew inspiration from her late mentor, Jana Novotna, the 1998 Wimbledon champion. This year's final also made history as it was the first Women's Singles Final in the Open Era where both opponents had previously met in a Grand Slam qualifier. Krejcikova's victory ensures that Wimbledon will have its eighth different women's singles champion in as many years. Notably, Krejcikova had 125-1 odds to win the tournament and will take home $3.45 million in prize money.
