VisitBaltimore's Key Bridge Demolition Set for Saturday to Free Trapped Ship
May 12, 2024, 12:40 AM
The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is scheduled for a controlled demolition this Saturday to address the aftermath of its recent collapse. Precision cutting charges will be used to remove a large section of the bridge, specifically the steel truss, which will be sent into the water. This operation, overseen by the Unified Command and set for late afternoon, is part of efforts to free the Dali containership, currently trapped by the bridge's wreckage. The Port of Baltimore anticipates resuming most operations next week following the demolition. Surprisingly, the crew aboard the Dali will shelter in place during the demolition. Additionally, authorities aim to clear part of the shipping channel by the end of May to facilitate normal maritime activities.
