VisitAustralia Raises Terrorism Threat Level to 'Probable' with Over 50% Chance of Attack in 12 Months
Aug 5, 2024, 02:07 AM
Australia has raised its terrorism threat level from 'possible' to 'probable' due to a rise in extreme ideologies and politically motivated violence. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the decision, citing intelligence advice and a global increase in politically motivated violence and extremism. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), led by Mike Burgess, has reported a greater than 50% chance of an onshore terrorist attack in the next 12 months. This is the first time the threat level has been raised to 'probable' since 2014. The change comes amid heightened community tensions over the war in Gaza, deteriorating social cohesion, and recent investigations into eight alleged terrorist incidents within Australia since April. Albanese has urged Australians to be aware but not frightened.
