VisitAttack in Central Burkina Faso by JNIM Leaves Up to 200 Dead, 140 Injured

An attack by the al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM in the Barsalogho region of Sanmatenga Province, central Burkina Faso, has resulted in the deaths of up to 200 people, including civilians, Homeland Defense Volunteers, and soldiers. The assault, which took place on August 24, 2024, also left at least 140 people injured. The attack has raised concerns about the security of the capital, Ouagadougou. Despite a 24-hour warning received by the government of Ibrahim Traoré, the attack occurred, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups in the region. Reports suggest as many as 300 civilians may have been killed.
