VisitArmy Names New M-SHORAD Air Defense System After Sgt. Stout
Jun 15, 2024, 06:24 PM
The U.S. Army has named its new short-range air defense system, M-SHORAD Increment 1, after Sgt. Mitchell William Stout, a Vietnam War hero who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Sgt. Stout, who was killed on March 12, 1970, is the only Air Defense Artillery soldier to have received America’s highest decoration for gallantry. The system, now called the Sgt. Stout, is designed to protect combat units on the battlefield from enemy rocket and drone attacks. Sgt. Stout saved lives by using his body to shield fellow soldiers from a grenade attack during the Vietnam War.
