Armenia Advances EU Accession Process; Bill Heads to Parliament, Referendum Required

The Armenian government has approved a legislative initiative to begin the process of joining the European Union, marking a significant step in the country's foreign policy. The bill, which was supported by the Cabinet, is now set to be discussed in the Armenian parliament. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has emphasized that the adoption of the draft law does not equate to immediate membership in the EU, but rather initiates the process, requiring a referendum for Armenia to become a member. Pashinyan noted the need to develop a 'roadmap' with the EU before any referendum. Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan highlighted the intensified cooperation between Armenia and the EU in recent years, covering political, economic, democratic, and security sectors.
