VisitArchaeologists Discover Largest Ever 2,000-Year-Old Private Thermal Bath in Pompeii
Jan 17, 2025, 11:02 AM
Archaeologists have unearthed a large private thermal bath complex in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, described as a 'once in a lifetime discovery' by Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The complex, found within a private house in the Regio IX area, is one of the largest ever discovered in Pompeii and dates back 2,000 years. It features hot, warm, and cold rooms, and is connected to a banquet hall, suggesting its use for social gatherings where the owner could display wealth and influence. The bathhouse is believed to be the largest and most sophisticated private thermal baths found in a Pompeian domus, with only a few other examples of similar size known in the city.
