The firearm recovered at the scene of the Trump assassination attempt was legally purchased by the suspect’s father, according to an urgent trace conducted by the ATF and multiple law enforcement sources. The shooter, identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, used an AR-style rifle to fire multiple rounds from a rooftop before being neutralized by a Secret Service sniper. The weapon was traced back to Crooks' father, who had legally purchased it. The deceased suspect attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump.
