VisitApple Disables AI Notification Summaries in iOS 18.3 Beta 3 After BBC Complaint
Jan 17, 2025, 06:02 AM
Apple Inc. has temporarily disabled its AI-generated notification summaries for news and entertainment apps in the latest iOS 18.3 beta 3 software update. This decision follows widespread criticism from news organizations, including the BBC, which lodged a complaint over the feature's tendency to produce inaccurate and misleading summaries. The feature, part of Apple's Apple Intelligence suite, had been generating false headlines, such as incorrectly stating that Pete Hegseth was fired and that Luigi Mangione had shot himself. Apple plans to re-enable the feature in a future update after making improvements. In the meantime, the company is introducing changes to notification summaries, such as displaying them in italics and allowing users to disable them for specific apps directly from the Lock Screen. Apple has also added a warning in the Settings app that the summaries may contain errors, emphasizing that the feature is still in beta.
