VisitAngels Sign LHP Yusei Kikuchi to $63 Million Deal Amid Aggressive Offseason Spending
Nov 25, 2024, 03:15 PM
The Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a three-year, $63 million contract with left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, as reported by multiple sources. This deal marks the most expensive signing in the Perry Minasian era, surpassing the four-year, $58 million contract with Raisel Iglesias in 2022. Kikuchi posted a 4.05 ERA over 175.2 innings with a strong 22.0 K-BB% last season. After being traded to the Houston Astros, he had a notable performance, achieving a 5-1 record with a 2.70 ERA over 10 starts. The Astros were reportedly interested in re-signing Kikuchi, but he chose to join the Angels. His addition bolsters the Angels' starting rotation, which now includes pitchers such as Kyle Hendricks, Reid Detmers, José Soriano, and Tyler Anderson. The Angels have been active this offseason, also signing players Jorge Soler, Travis d’Arnaud, and Kevin Newman, investing over $100 million in new contracts and adding $48 million to their payroll for the 2025 season. Kikuchi's tendency to allow home runs has been noted, but the team aims to improve its performance and compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season.
