Dec 9, 2024, 10:24 PM
Andy Kim of New Jersey and Adam Schiff of California were sworn into the U.S. Senate on Monday, December 9, 2024, filling vacancies in their respective states. Vice President Kamala Harris administered the oath of office. Kim, a three-term congressman, became the first Korean American senator in U.S. history. He was appointed by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy three weeks early, following the certification of his November election victory over Republican businessman Curtis Bashaw in a closely watched race to replace convicted Senator Bob Menendez. Schiff, who served two decades in the House of Representatives, was appointed to fill the seat previously held by Dianne Feinstein. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer welcomed them to the Senate.
