VisitAmazon Leads $500 Million Investment in Small Modular Reactors to Power Data Centers
Oct 16, 2024, 01:12 PM
Amazon has announced significant investments in nuclear energy projects to address its growing energy demands, particularly for powering artificial intelligence and AWS data centers. The company has committed over $500 million and is leading a funding round for X-Energy, a Maryland-based small modular reactor (SMR) developer, to fund the development of advanced nuclear reactor technology. Notably, billionaire financier Ken Griffin is among the investors in X-Energy. Amazon is also partnering with Energy Northwest to deploy SMRs in Washington State, with plans to conduct a feasibility study for a project near Energy Northwest's site. Additionally, Amazon is collaborating with Dominion Energy to explore SMR projects near the North Anna Nuclear Power Station in Virginia. The company aims to bring more than 5 gigawatts of SMR power online in the United States by 2039.
