VisitAlbania Bans TikTok for One Year After 14-Year-Old's Stabbing Death in November, Aims to Enhance School Safety
Dec 22, 2024, 12:17 AM
Albania has announced a one-year ban on TikTok, effective from early next year, following the stabbing death of a 14-year-old schoolboy in November. The incident, which followed arguments between the victim and the perpetrator on social media, has raised concerns about the influence of social media on children. Prime Minister Edi Rama, after meeting with parents and teachers across the country, stated that the ban is part of a broader plan to enhance school safety. Rama has criticized TikTok for fueling violence among youth both inside and outside of school, describing it as 'the neighborhood hooligan.' The decision comes amidst growing concerns from Albanian parents about children bringing knives to school, influenced by content seen on TikTok. Several European countries have also implemented restrictions on social media use for children, with Australia approving a complete ban for those under 16.
