VisitAI Music Startups Suno, Udio, and Uncharted Labs Face Copyright Lawsuits, Claim Fair Use
Aug 1, 2024, 08:55 PM
Artificial intelligence music startups Suno, Udio, and Uncharted Labs are facing copyright infringement lawsuits from major record labels including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music. The lawsuits allege that Suno and Udio's AI systems have been trained on copyrighted music without permission, which the startups admit. In their defense, Suno and Udio argue that their use of copyrighted recordings falls under the 'fair use' doctrine. The startups claim that the lawsuits are an attempt by the traditional music industry to stifle competition from AI-generated music. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is also involved in the legal actions against these AI companies. The responses were filed in federal court on Thursday.
