VisitABC News and Stephanopoulos Settle Trump Defamation Suit for $15 Million, Will Apologize
Dec 14, 2024, 09:20 PM
ABC News and anchor George Stephanopoulos have agreed to a $15 million settlement with President-elect Donald Trump to resolve a defamation lawsuit. The lawsuit originated from Stephanopoulos's incorrect on-air statement that Trump was 'found liable for rape' in a civil case involving writer E. Jean Carroll, whereas the court actually found Trump liable for sexual abuse, not rape. As part of the settlement, ABC News will contribute $15 million to a presidential foundation and museum to be established by Trump, will pay $1 million in attorney fees, and will issue a public apology expressing regret over the statements. The settlement comes after Stephanopoulos was ordered to appear for a deposition, allowing both parties to avoid a costly trial.
