In May, 4-year-old Jack Mangan from New Jersey became the recipient of New England's first “partial heart transplant,” a potentially life-saving operation designed specifically for children with valve defects. Seven weeks after the transplant, Jack appears to be fully recovered. Surgeons replaced two key parts of Jack’s heart and circulatory system with living tissues from the donor: his aortic valve and a three-quarter-inch segment of his aorta.
