Visit35 Killed, 43 Injured as Man Upset over Divorce Drives SUV into Crowd in Zhuhai
Nov 12, 2024, 03:19 PM
A 62-year-old man, identified by the surname Fan, drove his SUV into a crowd of people exercising outside the Zhuhai Sports Center in southern China's Guangdong province on Monday evening, November 11. The attack killed at least 35 people, including elderly individuals and children, and severely injured 43 others. The driver, reportedly dissatisfied with the outcome of his divorce settlement, attempted suicide shortly after the incident but was detained and hospitalized by police. Authorities are investigating the attack, which is one of the deadliest in recent Chinese history. President Xi Jinping called on officials to 'promptly resolve conflicts and disputes' in the wake of the incident. The initial reporting of the attack was heavily censored, with information suppressed for more than 24 hours. Makeshift memorials laid by residents at the site were later removed by authorities.
