Visit14 Syrian Police Killed, 10 Wounded in Ambush by Assad Loyalists in Tartous; Authorities Launch Operation
Dec 26, 2024, 09:35 AM
Syrian authorities reported that 14 police officers were killed and 10 others wounded on Wednesday in an ambush by forces loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad in the Tartous province, an Alawite-majority region and Assad's stronghold. The attack occurred as security personnel were conducting their duties in the western region of Syria. In response, the new Syrian military leadership launched an operation to pursue the remnants of Assad's loyalists in Tartous and other areas, giving them a four-day ultimatum to surrender. Clashes have since expanded to Homs and Damascus countryside, with three pro-Assad gunmen killed during operations. Interior Minister Mohammed Abdul Rahman vowed to 'strike with an iron fist' against anyone who threatens Syria's security. The escalation has raised fears of sectarian tensions in the country.
