An attempted prison break at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, on Monday has resulted in the deaths of at least 129 people, with 59 others injured. The incident occurred late on Sunday, and the situation is now under control, according to Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani. Gunfire erupted early in the overcrowded facility, which holds up to 15,000 inmates, leading to a deadly stampede. Among the deceased, 24 inmates were shot dead by warning gunshots. The prison is notorious for its poor conditions, which have been criticized by human rights groups.
