DOJ to Monitor Polls in 86 Jurisdictions Amid Pushback from Florida, Texas
Nov 2, 2024, 12:02 AM
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it will monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in 86 jurisdictions across 27 states during the upcoming November 5 election. This initiative marks the highest number of monitored jurisdictions in two decades amid growing concerns over partisan influence and voter suppression. However, several Republican-led states, including Florida and Texas, have pushed back against the DOJ's plans. Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd and Texas officials have stated that federal election monitors are not permitted inside polling places under state laws. The DOJ's monitoring efforts will cover key battleground states, including Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, as well as four counties in Florida, three counties in Pennsylvania, and San Juan County in Utah.
