U.S. Whooping Cough Cases Surge Fivefold to Over 16,000 in 2024, CDC Reports
Nov 21, 2024, 04:31 PM
Whooping cough cases are surging across the United States in 2024, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting over 16,000 cases so far—a fivefold increase compared to the same period last year. Pennsylvania has recorded the highest number of cases, while significant outbreaks have been reported in states like South Dakota, Arkansas, Ohio, and California. In South Dakota, cases are up by 415% over the five-year average, and Arkansas has reported more than 200 cases. San Diego County now has the most pertussis cases in California. Schools in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; Port Washington-Saukville, Wisconsin; and the University of Alabama in Huntsville have reported confirmed cases, raising concerns about school outbreaks. Tijuana has detected 40 cases this week, indicating cross-border concerns. Health officials attribute the rise to waning vaccine immunity, potential pathogen evolution, and decreased vaccine coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic.
