Glacial Dam Outburst Floods Juneau, Damages Over 100 Homes
Aug 8, 2024, 02:40 AM
Alaska's capital, Juneau, experienced severe flooding due to a glacial dam outburst from the Mendenhall River. The flooding, which has become a recurring issue, damaged more than 100 homes in the Mendenhall Valley area. In response to the disaster, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a state disaster emergency. Local officials, including the mayor and city manager, have been coordinating with the US Coast Guard and FEMA to manage the situation. The flooding is attributed to the retreating Mendenhall Glacier, a phenomenon exacerbated by climate change. As water levels begin to recede, efforts are underway to assess the damage and assist affected residents.
