Storm Dana Causes Catastrophic Floods in Spain: 62 Dead in Valencia
Oct 30, 2024, 08:20 AM
Torrential rains and flash floods triggered by Storm Dana have devastated eastern and southern Spain, particularly the Valencia region, resulting in at least 62 deaths and numerous missing persons. The Spanish meteorological agency put Valencia under the highest red alert for extreme rainfall. Heavy rainfall began on Monday night (28 October 2024), with some areas, including Chiva west of Valencia, experiencing over a year's worth of rain in just a few hours. Chiva recorded 491 mm (19.3 inches) of rain in eight hours, including 343 mm (13.5 inches) in just four hours, causing catastrophic flooding. The floods have swept away cars, shut down high-speed train connections, closed schools, and disrupted air travel. Other regions affected include Murcia, Malaga, and Albacete. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the nation, saying, "We mustn't let our guard down," and pledged that the government will use all means necessary to help the victims, stating "we will not leave you alone." Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency services and military forces deployed to assist those affected.
