French Senate Votes for 7 Unpaid Work Hours Annually to Raise €2.5 Billion for Social Security
Nov 21, 2024, 08:02 AM
The French Senate has voted to adopt a measure that would require all active workers in the public and private sectors to contribute seven hours of unpaid work per year to help fund social security expenses, particularly those related to the aging population. This "contribution de solidarité", proposed as part of the 2025 social security budget, aims to raise approximately €2.5 billion by having employees work additional hours without remuneration. The measure was passed on Wednesday night with 216 votes in favor and 119 against. The proposal now awaits adoption by the National Assembly.
